Golden Valley Police call for felony charge against local school administrator

Golden Valley police are pushing for a felony charge against a Robbinsdale Area Schools assistant principal who they accuse of interfering with a police investigation.

Fight in Robbinsdale school bathroom involved brass knuckles

The backstory:

Last November at Robbinsdale Academy-Highview, a school bathroom fight between two female students left one with a concussion and in need of stitches.

At the scene, officers say they were met with resistance by a school leader who was critical of their response.

"There were brass knuckles that were involved in this fight," Golden Valley Police Chief Virgil Green told FOX 9 on Monday.

The discovery of knuckles elevates the crime to a felony. However, Golden Valley Police say the assistant principal would not cooperate in their efforts to find the weapon.

"We did not leave the school that day with those brass knuckles," Green said.

Only later, after executing a search warrant, does Green say the assistant principal surrendered the brass knuckles to authorities.

"This was something that was most likely in his possession [on] the day of the fight, that should’ve been turned over immediately," Green said.

School district response

The other side:

Robbinsdale Area Schools sent FOX 9 a statement on Monday.

"We have conducted a thorough investigation and taken appropriate action. Principals are subject to a collective bargaining agreement and at this time there is no public data regarding any action taken by the District against any employees related to this matter."

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office has yet to make a charging decision. Police have also asked for a felony charge against the student who they call the aggressor in this fight.

Nonprofit calls for assistant principal's removal

What they're saying:

The nonprofit One In Five Foundation For Kids, which formed after the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, said in a press release on Monday it is also investigating the incident and calling for the assistant principal's removal. It also supports calls for charges against the assistant principal, and calls for their immediate suspension pending review.
