Attack raises security concern for MN gay clubs and festivals

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - In wake of the mass shooting in Orlando, some Twin Cities gay clubs and festivals are ramping up security.

At Gay 90’s in Downtown Minneapolis, metal detecting wands are now being used for the first time in club history.

“It was something that we decided to get and debated whether or not to use it and decided it wasn’t urgent yet, but now the [danger] levels have changed,” said General Manager Robert Parker.

Parker and others don’t want people to be afraid, but instead feel safe.

“Our security is mostly behind the scenes, but this year we will probably have more visible presence with additional police and private security on site,” said Dot Belstler, Executive Director of Twin Cities Pride.

Belstler says extra security measures will be in place for this year’s Pride Festival, which kicks off at the end of June.
