Allina Health, Doctors Council—SEIU reach tentative labor agreement
Allina union doctors picket for fair contract
Allina Health union doctors previously held a picket to advocate for contracts that ensure better patient care and improved treatment for healthcare workers.
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Allina Health has reached a tentative agreement with Doctors Council—SEIU, marking the union's first contract since negotiations started two years ago.
The contract is a three-year agreement that covers 600 Allina doctors, physicians' assistants and nurse practitioners who provide primary and urgent care, the union says.
This comes after a one-day strike in November that culminated with a rally outside of Allina's headquarters.

Big picture view:
The union said the agreement is the result of more than 60 bargaining sessions and a one-day strike that impacted 90% of Allina Health clinics.
The Doctor's Council also voted in March to authorize a longer-term strike if an agreement wasn't reached.

Details on the tentative agreement haven't been shared, but the union said it includes the following:
- Increased autonomy for providers, which includes control over policies that affect patient care.
- Safety improvements for healthcare providers, staff and patients.
- Fair pay and protections around parental leave, medical leave and family leave.
What they're saying:
Family Nurse Practitioner at Allina Bloominton Clinic Britta Kasmarik, who is also a member of the Doctors Council—SEIU bargaining team, shared the following statement:
"It has been a long fight over the last two years as we’ve worked to improve the care we provide to our patients. We formed the largest private provider union in the country and went out on a historic strike, and this is just the beginning of providers taking back our industry from healthcare executives. I’m so proud of our work to improve providers' well-being and the sustainability of primary care."
What's next:
Union members will now vote to ratify the agreement, which is expected to happen over multiple days starting next week, the Doctor's Council said.
Allina Health response

Allina Health shared the following statement on the tentative agreement:
"We are pleased that Allina Health and Doctors Council—SEIU, representing clinicians in Primary and Urgent Care, have reached a tentative agreement. The agreement is now subject to ratification by union membership.
"The tentative agreement reflects the priorities of both parties and supports Allina Health’s ability to continue caring for our community well into the future. This important step forward allows us to focus on caring for patients and supporting the teams who provide that care every day."

Allina Doctors Council announces strike
The union announced that a one-day strike will happen on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at three Allina Health clinics.
The backstory:
Members of the Doctors Council at Allina Health filed the strike notice in October 2025, marking the first time in Minnesota history physicians in the state have gone on strike.
Pickets then took place at multiple clinics across Minnesota.
"If we don't do this, what we're looking at is taking what Allina is offering, taking what's on the table," said Dr. Matt Hoffman, a family doctor at the Allina Vadnais Heights Clinic. "And really the fear of that, is that if we do that, we are going to see primary care continue to get worse at Allina."
The group said it voted to unionize in October 2023 and became the largest private-sector providers union in the country. Bargaining then began in February 2024.
