Camping out at the State Fair

Camping is admittedly not for everyone, but did you know there is a campground at the State Fair ? At this campground, you are a lot less likely to be run out of camp by a bear.

Three different groups of people stay at the campground during the fair; the vendors that come from all over the country, fair employees and members of the general public.

Campground Superintendent Terri Blair said the campground is at capacity almost every year and typically amasses a long waiting list.

Some enthusiastic fairgoers have been coming to the campground for years to stay for all 12 days of the fair.

"The people that have been coming here love it and it's part of their family tradition," Blair said.

The campground has been a staple of the fair since at least the 1950s based on old fair photos, but Blair said she believes it people had been camping at the fair for many decades before that.
