President Donald Trump will make his State of the Union Address Tuesday night in Washington, D.C. Minnesota is likely to get a big emphasis, and several lawmakers are bringing special guests to the event. FOX 9's Rob Olson has more.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is busy at the State Capitol Tuesday presenting bills with a heavy emphasis on gun violence prevention. FOX 9's Corin has the latest, including two empty student desks at the Capitol in remembrance of Annunciation students Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski. Another 60 chairs are sitting empty outside, representing 60 children killed by gun violence since 2021.

Rep. Ilhan Omar criticized President Trump ahead of the State of the Union address on issues like the economy, Operation Metro Surge, and the handling of the Epstein files, saying the “Pedophile Protection Party in chief has instructed his Justice Department to cover up the Epstein files.”  

Rep. Betty McCollum addressed the economy and federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota ahead of Trump's State of the Union. McCollum criticized rising costs and described the recent ICE surge as “a disaster for our economy and for so many families,” while also raising concerns about election claims and voter roll scrutiny.

Minnesota House Democrats held a press conference ahead of the State of the Union, criticizing President Trump’s economic policies and immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota. Reps. Betty McCollum, Ilhan Omar and Angie Craig addressed rising costs, Operation Metro Surge and broader national concerns before the president’s speech.

Lydia Kaiser, an eighth-grade student at Annunciation Catholic School, shared her harrowing experience of surviving a mass shooting, calling on lawmakers to take action on gun violence.

Minnesota lawmakers will take up several gun control bills on Tuesday. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will unveil these proposals ahead of a House committee hearing that will discuss bills related to a ban on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. This comes as students and families from Annunciation Catholic Church and School put together a display of empty school desks to represent the children killed by gun violence.

President Donald Trump will give his first State of the Union Address of his second term to Congress Tuesday night, and he's suggested it's going to be long. 

The FBI is still investigating a man who was shot and killed over the weekend in what may have been a third assassination attempt on President Trump. It comes as Trump is preparing to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. FOX’s Doug Luzader reports.
