Why Twins legend Harmon Killebrew deserves a postage stamp
Minnesota’s congressional delegation is using Major League Baseball All-Star week to support the consideration of a U.S. postal stamp for Twins legend Harmon Killebrew.
“Mr. Killebrew’s legacy on and off the field exemplifies the best of Minnesota as well as the best of our nation,” the delegation wrote in a letter to the U.S. Postal Service Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee. “We are proud of such an exemplary role model for current and future generations, and see this stamp as an important way of preserving the legacy of Harmon Killebrew.”

Dear USPS Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee,
We write in strong support for the proposed stamp featuring Minnesota Twins’ Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Mr. Killebrew’s legacy on and off the field exemplifies the best of Minnesota as well as the best of our nation.
As a member of the Twins, Harmon Killebrew was renowned as the home run king, but perhaps even better known for his sportsmanship. He earned respect from teammates and opponents alike, and his reputation only grew as he went on to broadcasting and coaching. However, it was his community and charitable accomplishments that perhaps best reflected his character. Following his mother’s words, “we are here to help each other, son,” Mr. Killebrew dedicated himself to a wide array of charitable projects, including the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association and the Harmon Killebrew Foundation.
Harmon Killebrew believed that every child deserved the chance to play his favorite game, and so it was no surprise that his favorite charity was the Miracle League, an organization that provides specially-designed baseball fields for children with disabilities. He established fields across the country, and has left a lasting impact on the children who were given the opportunity to play the game.
We are proud of such an exemplary role model for current and future generations, and see this stamp as an important way of preserving the legacy of Harmon Killebrew.
