The Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday that they are retiring Joe Mauer’s uniform number, No. 7.

Mauer announced his retirement at the end of the 2018 season. The St. Paul native played his entire major league career with the Twins. He was chosen as the first overall pick for the Twins in 2001 - when he was 18 - and made his MLB debut in 2004.

Gov. Mark Dayton has proclaimed Tuesday, December 18, 2018 “Joe Mauer Day” in Minnesota.

“Joe Mauer will forever be recognized as one of Minnesota’s all-time greatest athletes, and will continue to inspire future generations of girls and boys with his exceptional talent and character,” the governor said in his proclamation.

The Twins will retire Mauer’s number during a pregame celebration sometime during the 2019 season. The date of the game has yet to be determined.
