Gov. Mark Dayton has declared Friday, Oct. 6 "Minnesota Lynx Day" in Minnesota after the basketball team won their fourth WNBA title in seven years Wednesday night.

The team will be honored at a celebration reception at the Governor's Residence with Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith.

"The Minnesota Lynx are a phenomenal team, with the best regular season record in the WNBA followed by winning their fourth WNBA Championship," Dayton said in a statement. "They won a thrilling final game on Wednesday night with their exceptional talent, teamwork and tenacity. All of Minnesota should be very proud of these World Champions."

Fans celebrated the Lynx Thursday night with a parade down University Avenue in Minneapolis ending at Williams Arena. The night ended with a ceremony, where the players thanked the fans for their ongoing support.

“I didn’t expect this,” Shooting guard and forward Seimone Augustus said. “You know, we went through a lot of hard times, obviously, to get to this point. But I’ll do it all over again if it’s going to work out like this.”

The team beat the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals 85-76, redeeming themselves after losing to the Sparks in Game 5 on their home court in 2016.
