Video captures highway-blocking school bus incident in central Minnesota

The Cambridge-Isanti School District in central Minnesota is investigating an “unfortunate situation” captured on cell phone video in which a student-filled school bus was blocking a lane of highway traffic as fast-moving cars approached.

“Isanti/Cambridge bus 9 today almost had an accident today,” said the caption of a video posted to Facebook by a concerned parent. “We need the parents to share, so we can keep our children safe. I'm not putting my kid back on the bus until we get a safer driver.”

The incident happened Thursday, Sept. 15 on Highway 65, just south of Isanti. The school district released a statement Friday morning, explaining that the bus was forced to stop in an intersection after a driver in front of the bus stopped unexpectedly.

“Cambridge-Isanti Schools was made aware of an unfortunate situation on Thursday evening involving a bus that was forced to stop in an intersection due to a driver in front of the bus stopping unexpectedly. The district continues to investigate the situation and will take appropriate action as the facts of the case are determined. Cambridge-Isanti Schools does put student safety as a top priority and will continue to work with all staff, including bus drivers, to ensure everything is done to keep student safety an essential part of what we do each and every day.”
