Trader Joe’s customers have until Tuesday to file settlement claims

The deadline for Trader Joe’s customers to file a claim in a class action lawsuit is Tuesday. 

Trader Joe’s agreed to pay $7.4 million in a class action settlement to resolve claims that their receipts violated federal law by displaying too many digits on customers' debit and credit cards.

Why you should care:

A website established by the plaintiff announced and publicized the settlement in April, asking for any Trader Joe’s customer who used their credit or debit card between March 5, 2019, and July 19, 2019, to check to see if they are entitled to a claim. 

Only settlement class members who have submitted a valid and timely claim will be eligible for a prorated payment from the settlement fund. 

The backstory:

In July 2019, plaintiff Brian Keim filed a lawsuit against the supermarket, claiming they violated the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, according to legal documents. He said the store printed receipts that displayed the first six and last four digits of credit and debit card numbers. 

Trader Joe’s denied the allegations, saying not all of their stores printed receipts in that manner. The chain later decided to settle to avoid risk, saying litigation would be long and expensive. They agreed to pay the $7,400,000 to a "Settlement Fund" and release claims of the settlement class. 

Depending on the number of people who submit a claim by the Tuesday deadline, attorneys say the amount claimants could receive could be around $102 per person.
