Touring the Sculpture Garden by snowshoe

Put your most artistic parka on standby. This winter the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is breaking out the hot cocoa and snowshoes.

Trading the mist of “Spoonbridge and Cherry” for the sweat of a warming house, the Walker is ready to fully embrace our chilly Minnesota roots. Come February, snowshoe art tours and saunas will take over the lower garden.

For three special Target Free Thursday Nights, and one Free First Saturday, the Walker Education wing will truly transform their domain into a winter wonderland.  Curators will rely on the Center for Outdoor Adventure for the snowshoes (or hiking poles if mother nature forgets about the snow).

Groups of 25 will then traverse through the $41 million renovated campus. Tour guides hope snow-draped pieces will provide the necessary talking points – who knows what we could learn from a snow-covered “Back of Snowman”.

Once your tour wraps up, grab your beer token and enjoy the warmth of the pop-up warming house (other known as the main lobby).  Or if that’s not warm enough, Little Box Sauna is designing the perfect hangout for you and your 9 cold friends.

It’s all part of the Walker’s mission to encourage use of the newly-renovated space all- year round.  The event should also prove a timely distraction – something to fill the void after Super Bowl 52 madness dies down.

“Showshoe tours and Saunas” runs Thursdays, Feb. 8, 15 and 22, and also Saturday, Feb. 10.  The Walker says be sure to bring the long underwear and your best boots.
