Stargate Nightclub security guard shoots, kills 1 of 6 attackers

An armed security guard shot and killed one of 6 men who attacked him outside of the Stargate Nightclub in Maplewood, Minn. The victim of the shooting was identified Friday afternoon as 20-year-old Chou Tony Yang of St Paul, Minn.

The shooting was reported at 12:53 a.m. Friday in the parking lot of the nightclub at 1700 Rice Street. Video evidence and witness statements indicate the security guard was chased by the shooting victim and at least 5 other men from the entrance of the nightclub. After running out into the parking lot, the guard fell to the ground and was swarmed and assaulted.

The security guard fired his gun, striking a 20-year-old man from St. Paul. The shooting victim was taken to Regions Hospital in critical condition, and later died at the hospital.

Preliminary indication is the shooting victim had been asked to leave the nightclub shortly before the incident.

The security officer, an employee of JBM Patrol and Protection Services, has been fully cooperative with Maplewood police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
