St. Paul Saints to march into new home at CHS Field

The St. Paul Saints will march into their new home at CHS Field tonight, May 21 to begin their inaugural season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Before the 7:05 p.m. game starts, the team will be welcomed with "one part parade, two parts controlled chaos, and all parts entertainment," a team rep said.

That includes a Mardi Gras style parade which will begin in left-center field and circle around the warning track of the ballpark as fans enter.

"Only the Saints could put on a parade that includes Mayor Chris Coleman, St. Paul City Council, government officials and various other groups instrumental in the fruition of CHS Field along with stilt walkers, jugglers, fire swallowers and (family friendly) burlesque dancers," the Saints said in a press release. Mayor Coleman will also be throwing out the first pitch.

The Saints will ramp up their ‘Saints Go Marching In' to CHS Field with the first 7,000 fans receiving a souvenir hat.

Union Depot celebration

In downtown St. Paul, the Union Depot is hosting a home opener celebration from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The festivities are free and open to the public. CHS Field is just a short walk from Union Depot.

The celebration will include performances by the Harding High School Drum Line and jazz act The Jack Brass Band, an art market featuring the work of numerous Lowertown artists and others from the St. Paul Art Collective, samplings of Lipton Sparkling Iced Tea, giveaways of Hometown Hankies featuring the art of Ken Avidor, and other activities.

Fireworks show every Friday night

Every Friday night this season, the field will be putting on an "entertaining and spectacular" fireworks show. The first "Xcel Energy Fireworks Friday" will take place at 7:05 p.m. on May 22.

"This season all Friday night fireworks will have a distinct musical theme," the Saints said in a press release. "Up first is music of TV Shows -- from the Rembrandt's Friends theme to Gary Portnoy's ever popular ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name' from Cheers to Jan Hammer's exciting Miami Vice theme."
