The backstory:

St. Cloud police responded early Sunday morning to the report of shots fired inside an apartment building near the intersection of 2nd Avenue NE and 2nd Street NE.

Officers found two victims in the building: 17-year-old Layson Davis of St. Cloud on a stairwell between the first and second floors and a 19-year-old St. Joseph man in the first-floor hallway.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene while the St. Joseph man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. As of Wednesday, the surviving victim remains in critical condition, police said.

Over the weekend, police said the suspects and victims knew each other but did not say what led to shots being fired.
