SPPD: Man shot, killed by St. Paul police fired gun at woman with 5 kids in home

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) - A man is dead after a violent domestic call in St. Paul ended in an officer-involved shooting, according to St. Paul police.

St. Paul Police Sgt. Mike Ernster said around 6 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a report of a violent domestic incident on the 400 block of Earl Street. The woman told 911 the man fired two shots at her. 

When police arrived at the scene they found the woman, uninjured, about a block away from the home. She told police children were still inside the home. Sgt. Ernster said as many as five young children were inside, and were all found safe. Police are uncertain if the children witnessed the shots being fired. 

Police found the suspect nearby. After making contact with him, "at some point shots were fired" by officers, hitting and killing the suspect. Police found a gun at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

The man shot and killed by police was identified by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner as 28-year-old Phumee Lee.

Several officers were wearing activated body cameras at the time. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be in charge of the investigation.

Police had been called twice to the home in the past.
