The Anoka County sheriff’s office has arrested a man who they believe used pepper spray on an ATM customer to steal his cash. The robbery was reported on Oct. 17 at 4:10 p.m. at the US Bank at 3445 Bunker Lake Blvd NW in Andover, Minn.

A 61-year-old man told police he was using the ATM inside the vestibule of the bank when Kai Stellmach, 24, sprayed him in the face with a chemical irritant and demanded his money.  The victim fought back but was sprayed heavily in the face and robbed of his cash.

Moments before the robbery, witnesses saw a man resembling Stellmach pictured in the surveillance photos either riding a bicycle or skateboard westbound through the adjacent strip mall.

The Anoka County sheriff’s office released the security camera photos to the public Monday. The sheriff’s office says they were able to find and arrest Stellmach on Tuesday morning due to the information provided by people who came forward after seeing the photos.

Stellmach has not yet been formally charged. The case will be forwarded to the Anoka County attorney’s office, which will determine what criminal charges are appropriate.
