Police shoot burglar during fight with homeowner in Blaine, Minn.

Police in Blaine, Minn. shot a knife-wielding burglar who was fighting with the homeowner moments before officers arrived. The burglar was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, and is expected to survive.

Anoka County emergency dispatch received a 911 call at 3:45 a.m. Thursday from a woman who had locked herself in the bedroom after someone broke into her home on the 100 block of 92nd Avenue NE. She said the burglar was fighting with her boyfriend in the kitchen at the time of the call.

All Blaine police officers were on other incidents at the time of the call, so two officers from Coon Rapids were the first to arrive on scene. The boyfriend was able to open the door for police, at which time the suspect lunged at officers and the boyfriend. Officers shot the suspect, then immediately called for first aid before he was taken to the hospital. No officers were injured.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating this officer-involved shooting, which is the third in the past two weeks in the Twin Cities. There will be a separate investigation into the criminal conduct of the suspect, which will be conducted by Blaine police and the Anoka County sheriff's office.
