MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - A special election for Minnesota Senate District 60 is being held Tuesday, Jan. 28, to fill the vacancy in the district after Sen. Kari Dziedzic died of cancer in December.

Voters in Minneapolis are heading to the polls on Tuesday in a special election to fill the vacancy in Minnesota Senate District 60.
GOP candidate Abigail Wolters and DFL candidate Doron Clark won the primary special election on Jan. 14, beating out several other opponents.
Big picture view:
The Minnesota Senate is currently tied with 33 Democrats and Republicans on each side, so this election will decide which party takes the majority control.
Senate District 60 represents northeastern parts of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. It skews heavily Democrat, with Dziedzic winning 85.7% of the vote in 2020 and 98.7% of the vote in 2022, when she ran unopposed.

House District 40B was also set to hold a special election on Tuesday after it was left vacant by DFL Rep.-elect Curtis Johnson’s resignation when it was determined he didn’t live in the district he would represent. However, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled that the election must be delayed, and a new date has not yet been determined.
