Father and baby girl die in head-on crash with semi

A 31-year-old father and his one-year-old daughter died in a head-on crash between an SUV and a semi near Randolph Township in Dakota County, according to State Patrol.

The crash happened at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday near the intersection of Highway 56 and 280th St.

31-year-old Jason Calderara was driving the SUV northbound on Highway 56 and had passed a car and cut back to the northbound lane at the last second, according to State Patrol.

A minivan moving southbound slammed on the brakes and moved to the right shoulder to avoid a collision. The semi driving southbound behind the van also braked, causing it to jackknife, go into the northbound lane, and hit the SUV on the front driver's side.

Jason Calderara and his one-year-old daughter Melody Calderara died in the crash. His wife 26-year-old Elizabeth Calderara and son nine-year-old Nicholas Calderara received serious injuries.

The 71-year-old driver of the semi received non-life threatening injuries.
