Family: Minnesota girl killed in Jellystone Park crash was walking where she was supposed to

The family of a 7-year-old Minnesota girl who was run over by a pickup truck at Jellystone Park Camp-Resort near the Wisconsin Dells Sunday says she was walking to the pool on a park-approved path when the crash occurred.

A family spokesperson identified the victim as McKenzie Aucapina of Zimmerman, Minn.

According to the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, at 10:24 a.m. a 76-year-old man was driving a pickup truck through the camping area and, upon cresting a hill, struck McKenzie. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s important to us that people understand that McKenzie was walking exactly where she was expected to walk on the path/roadway to the pool and restrooms,” the family said in a statement. “She was pronounced dead at the scene. We hope to work with the park in getting a better understanding of how this could have happened and how to make sure if never happens to another child or family again.”

The crash remains under investigation. FOX 9 has reached out to Jellystone Park for a statement.
