2 dead after motorcycle, minivan collide in Fridley intersection

Police confirmed that two people are dead after their motorcycle struck a minivan in a Fridley intersection on Monday afternoon. Police said both were not wearing helmets.

The incident happened on East River Road and 79th Way NE around 3 p.m. Preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle ran a red light at East River Road and struck the minivan being driven by an adult female, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office said.

"The driver of the mini-van had her child with as a passenger," Cdr. Paul Sommer said. "Both were transported to Unity Hospital for evaluation but showed no obvious signs of injury or impairment."

The motorcycle driver and passenger were both found dead upon arrival. Authorities said the deceased driver was a 52-year-old male from Fridley, and the passenger was an adult female. Names involved are being withheld pending family notification.

The case remains under the investigation of the Fridley Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Unit, the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.
