Halloween snow chances nearly zero for Twin Cities
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Despite the events that have unfolded over the last couple of days, giving many areas their first accumulating snow, having a white Halloween is still pretty rare across the state. For those that have lived in Minnesota a while, our memory is likely skewed because of that big Halloween Blizzard back in 1991.
But this map shows us just how rare this type of storm is this time of year. In fact, the Twin Cities metro only has about a 3 percent chance of having a white Halloween in a given year based off of climatology (what has happened in past years). That means that the Twin Cities has a white Halloween roughly once every 30 years or so.
While you may think that with colder temperatures around, we may actually have a pretty good shot at a white Halloween this year, but I can confirm that we really don’t.
Barring anything unforeseen, chances of a white Halloween for the metro this year are nearly zero as mostly “warm” storms will likely bookend the holiday, coming in on Monday and on Wednesday.
However, for some parts of northern Minnesota that have a few inches of snow lingering on the ground, it’s far better. But chances are often better to have a white Halloween in northern Minnesota anyway on any given year. Most areas will see some snow on Halloween about once a decade.
