Minnesota?s Largest Candy Store opens for the season

Every season, Minnesota?s Largest Candy Store embarks on a project to expand or renovate. During the off-season, they added a new mural in the planetarium. Muralist Shawn McCann and his team of five, spent six weeks on this project that includes a rotating ceiling. It?s an ode to several different shows and movies that have a space theme including Star Trek, Star Wars, Rick and Morty and even Spaceballs. Minnesota?s Largest Candy Store is located in Jordan in the giant yellow barn right off Highway 169. They open daily at 8am through November.

Goat yoga at The Hayloft in Hastings

A ranch in Hastings with a loveable lineup of animals is giving visitors a chance to lunch with llamas, strike a pose in goat yoga or party it up with ponies. The Hayloft opened up five years ago and started with one horse. Now they have a variety of animals and a big lineup of events and summer camps.

It?s all about the hats this weekend from the Kentucky Derby to the King?s Coronation. A St. Paul milliner, Angie Hall Sandifer of Angie?s Hats, has seen plenty of her creations at Churchill Downs and that trend continues this weekend. She perfected the art of hat making after a job change and never looked back. She does have ready-to-wear hats in her Lowertown studio if you?re in a pinch for a fabulous hat, but also does custom hats.

Aviation museum plans breakfast, plane giveaway

Inside the Flying Cloud Airport is a hangar full of history. Twice a year, Wings of the North rolls open the doors for the public to see the collection of World War II planes. One of those events is Saturday May 6th. Wings of the North is hosting a pancake breakfast from 8am to 11am. Enter through Gate H on the Northwest corner of the field. Pancake breakfast tickets are available at the door for $8 per person; admission for kids 6-12 is $5; kids 5 and under are admitted free. A family of two adults and two kids is $20. They will also open the sweepstakes to win a plane or $35,000.

The Minnesota Zoo's Farm Babies opens to the public on Saturday, April 29, and runs through June 4. There are ? or will be ? baby goats, lambs, llama, cows, chickens and pigs. Farm Babies is included with zoo admission.

Art and flowers collide at Mia?s Art in Bloom

Flowers are often depicted in art, so why not the reverse, using flowers to make art. That?s the idea behind Art in Bloom at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The event runs from April 27-30. There are 150 floral creations. Each artist selected a piece from Mia?s collection to use as inspiration for their designs. The event is free to attend.

Horse Expo gallops into the fairgrounds

The Minnesota State Fairgrounds will be bustling this weekend for the Minnesota Horse Expo. There will be horses representing many breeds, a marketplace, clinicians, presentations and entertainment. The show runs Friday, April 28, through Sunday, April 30. It is the state?s largest equine trade show.

Chanhassen Autoplex opens garages for show

Six times a year, the garage-condos of the Chanhassen Autoplex roll up the doors for all to explore. Each garage houses a unique car collection including Antique, Classics, Collector, Exotic, Muscle, Street Rod and even famous crime fighting cars from TV shows and movies. The event, Cars and Caves, takes place on the last Saturday of the month from April to September from 9am to 1pm. The event is free but they do accept donations to the charity of choice for each month. Donations from Saturday, April 29th will go to the non-profit, Wishes & More.

Woodworking show at Eden Prairie Center

Woodworkers from across the state are prepping to showcase some of their best and most unique work at the Northern Woods Exhibition 2023. The event will take place at the Eden Prairie Center Atrium Thursday, April 27, through Sunday April 30. The show is free to attend and will include free demonstrations daily. Thursday demonstration is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Friday demonstration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday demonstration from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday demonstration from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mighty Mississippi cleanup challenge is this weekend

The Mighty Mississippi cleanup challenge began in Goodhue County last year. It's now spreading to other counties along the Mississippi River, including Anoka County. The county is seeking volunteers to help cleanup the riverside, though the high water level will pose a challenge. If you want to take part in the Might Mississippi cleanup challenge in Anoka County, RSVP by calling 763-324-3413. It'll be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday. Another opportunity will be held on Wednesday.

Spring art crawl underway in St. Paul

The longest-running art crawl in the United States continues in St. Paul this weekend. The St. Paul Art Crawl began in 1991 and now spans four weekends. St. Paul is home to 10 designated art districts and for the crawl, there are 21 venues and galleries to explore.

Restaurant and modern-day speakeasy open in former VFW in Waconia

The old VFW in Waconia has gone through a major renovation and while there are odes to the past, it?s unrecognizable. The building now houses an Italian restaurant, Bode Gray?s, that specializes in artisan pizza. In the basement, a speakeasy called The Brass Hat that has an unmarked back-alley entrance. Bode Gray?s is located at 125 W 1st St. in Waconia. It?s open Tuesday through Sunday. The Brass Hat is open Tuesday through Saturday.

University of Minnesota's Reuse Program aims to prevent waste

The University of Minnesota campus is vast. There are 250 buildings and they generate a lot of waste. Because of that, the university developed the Reuse Program to keep unwanted furniture, supplies and fixtures out of the waste stream. Instead, these items are loaded into a warehouse and twice a week the doors open for the public to shop. The best way to see what?s in the warehouse from week to week is to follow along on the University of Minnesota Reuse Program Facebook page. The warehouse is open on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There?s a new addition to the Mall of America parking lot and you may have seen it while driving on Interstate 494. The giant red and yellow tent is home to the Royal Canadian International Circus through April 23. There are no animals in this circus, just incredibly talented humans. The show includes a high wire troupe from Columbia, bone-breaking contortionists from Africa who made waves on "America?s Got Talent" and the Globe of Death Motorcyclists among others. The big top is in the North Parking lot at MOA.

Puppet fashion show planned as the Avalon Theatre reopens

Minneapolis? iconic Avalon Theatre is back and kicking off its return with a Puppet Fashion show from the Heart of the Beast Theatre. The show begins on Thursday April 13th and runs through Sunday. It?s also a chance for theatre-goers to get a look at the renovations happening at the historic stage. It was originally built in 1909. That theatre burned down and another was built in the same place. The Heart of the Beast Theatre got its start in 1979. They?re also planning to open a puppet library at the end of the month where people can check out the puppets for free, like you would a book at the library.

Two local youth golfers are fresh off their trip to Augusta National Golf Club to compete in the The Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. Tens of thousands of kids competed to qualify for the finals, and only 80 kids made it to the finals in Augusta. Reese Barry of Medina competed in the Girls? 12-13 division and finished in 5th place. Sander Ohe is from Edina and placed 9th in the Boys? 14-15 division.

This weekend, the Twin Cities newest and most extravagant music center is honoring the Trombone. Schmitt Music is hosting Twin Cities Trombone Day at its new flagship store in Bloomington. The event is free and open to all. It takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday April 8. The day will be filled with performances, clinics, and presentations. The special guest is Sasha Romero, a principal trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York City. She?ll be performing at 1 p.m. and hosting a masterclass at 4 p.m.

Curious plant, coffee and pizza shop opens in Apple Valley

For those who love coffee, plants and pizza, there?s a new spot in Apple Valley designed with you in mind. The restaurant is on the corner of Galaxie and County Road 42. One side is dedicated to plants and caffeine. It?s called Curiouser Coffee and Conservatory. The drinks are unique offering unexpected twists like Cocoa Puff infused milk and Biscoff Cookie Butter Fat Washed Cold Brew. The seating area is packed with greenery and every plant that is named is for sale. On the other side is Pizzeria Social and a sizeable bar. It offers both wood-fired pizzas and thin crust tavern-style pizzas. The coffee side opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. The pizza restaurant opens at 11 a.m. The building is closed on Mondays.
