A Minnesota House committee met Tuesday afternoon to propose a bill that would start the process of banning assault rifles and high-capacity magazines in the aftermath of the Annunciation mass shooting. The bill failed in a 10-10 vote.

Rob Doar, the President of the Minnesota Gun Owners Law Center, said a bill to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, if it were law, wouldn't have prevented the mass shooting at Annunciation Church and School. He says ordinary people shouldn't be criminalized for owning ordinary things.

Annunciation parent Brittany Haeg spoke at Minnesota House committee meeting on gun legislation Tuesday at the State Capitol. Haeg's 6-year-old son was shot multiple times last August, and is now the youngest survivor of a school shooting in U.S. history.

Harry Kaiser, the father of Annunciation eighth-grader Lydia Kaiser and a gym teacher at the school, spoke at a House hearing Tuesday on gun violence prevention and banning assault rifles. Lydia Kaiser was shot in the head during the Aug. 27 mass shooting, and survived her injuries.

The parents of Harper Moyski gave emotional testimony during a Minnesota House hearing on gun violence on assault weapons on Tuesday at the State Capitol. Moyski was one of two students killed during the Aug. 27, 2025 mass shooting at Annunciation Church and School.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is busy at the State Capitol Tuesday presenting bills with a heavy emphasis on gun violence prevention. FOX 9's Corin has the latest, including two empty student desks at the Capitol in remembrance of Annunciation students Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski. Another 60 chairs are sitting empty outside, representing 60 children killed by gun violence since 2021.

Governor Tim Walz, alongside legislative leaders and gun violence survivors, are pushing for a comprehensive gun violence prevention package.

Lydia Kaiser, an eighth-grade student at Annunciation Catholic School, shared her harrowing experience of surviving a mass shooting, calling on lawmakers to take action on gun violence.

Minnesota lawmakers will take up several gun control bills on Tuesday. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will unveil these proposals ahead of a House committee hearing that will discuss bills related to a ban on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. This comes as students and families from Annunciation Catholic Church and School put together a display of empty school desks to represent the children killed by gun violence.

Parents of Annunciation Catholic Church and School students are calling for gun violence prevention at the Minnesota Legislature this year. Two students were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at Annunciation last year. 

Annunciation Catholic School is hosting an annual Dancing with the Stars event to raise money for the school and mental health services.
