Reports: Sam Mitchell to be named interim Wolves head coach

Sources told Yahoo! Sports reporter Adrian Wojnarowski that assistant coach Sam Mitchell will be named interim head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves as head coach and president of basketball operations Flip Saunders battles cancer.

Saunders announced in August that he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which doctors called “very treatable and curable.”

Saunders still hopes to return to his coaching duties this season.

Mitchell was named assistant coach in June 2014 and served as head coach of the Toronto Raptors from 2004-2008 and served two stints as an assistant coach, coaching under Avery Johnson in New Jersey during 2010-11 and George Karl in Milwaukee from 2002-04. Mitchell joined the NBA during the 1989-90 season and spent 10 seasons with the Wolves.
