MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) - Jordan Murphy will go down as one of the greatest Gophers basketball players ever, and he was named First Team-All Big Ten by conference coaches on Monday.
Murphy was one of two Minnesota players to earn conference awards. Amir Coffey was selected Third Team All-Big Ten, fresh off being named the league’s player of the week.
Murphy led the Big Ten with 11.7 rebounds per game, and finished second in the Big Ten with 1,262 career rebounds. He passed former teammate Nate Mason on Friday with 14 points in a loss at Maryland to the No. 5 spot in career scoring at Minnesota with 1,732 career points. Murphy has 21 double-doubles on the season, good for second in the country.
Coffey was named Third Team All-Big Ten after finishing fifth in scoring in conference games with 17.3 points per game. He’s seventh overall in conference scoring at 15.8 points per game for the whole season. Coffey recorded his first career double-double with 31 points and 12 rebounds in a win at Northwestern. He tied a career-high with 32 points in a win over Purdue on Senior Night.
He’s scored in double figures in 25 of the Gophers’ 31 games this season.
Despite good freshman seasons from both Daniel Oturu and Gabe Kalscheur, neither were named to the league's All-Freshman Team.
The Gophers (19-12) are the No. 7 seed for the Big Ten Tournament and face No. 10 seed Penn State Thursday night.
