A speeding vehicle flew off a bridge and fell into the westbound lanes of I-94, ending in a fiery crash in north Minneapolis, according to Minneapolis police.

Sgt. Catherine Michal says the car went off the N 41st Ave Bridge just before 10 p.m.

Police in the area heard the crash and responded to the scene, where they found two people trapped inside the vehicle.

As the vehicle caught fire, officers extricated the driver and the passenger.

The driver, identified as Floyd Cunningham, 31, of Minneapolis has since died. The passenger's condition is unknown, but she was speaking to police after the crash.

Officials shut down both directions of traffic, closing I-94 from Exit 228 at Dowling Avenue North near Robbinsdale and Exit 226 at 49th Avenue North in Columbia Heights.

Minnesota State Patrol is handling the investigation.
