'The Mighty Ducks' Columbia Arena demolished in Fridley, Minn.
FRIDLEY, Minn. (KMSP) - The former Columbia Arena building and famed filming location of "D3: The Mighty Ducks" could become the future site of a new city hall in Fridley, Minn.
The deteriorating arena was recently taken down after being vacant for the last 10 years. Prior to that, the hockey rink was the home of local youth hockey teams for more than 20 years. It gained national attention in the mid-90s as the site for the third installment of Disney's "The Mighty Ducks" film franchise.
The City of Fridley purchased the property in 2014. After determining there was no way to restore, they asked the public for input on the future of the location, according to a news release.
In September, the Fridley city council began researching the possibility of using the Columbia Arena property for a new city hall campus, including offices for police fire and public works, as well as a community center.
The city council has not yet voted on whether to turn the property into a site for city hall but will use the remainder of the year to explore the idea. Officials will determine whether to go through with the proposal in early 2016.
