The backstory:

The Robbinsdale Police Department said on Dec. 2, officers were dispatched for reports of shots fired near Lowry Avenue North and Indiana Avenue North.

While en route, officers also received a crash detection from a cell phone from the same area.

Upon arrival, officers located Molette suffering from a gunshot wound inside a crashed vehicle. The 22-year-old was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office listed Molette’s cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest, and the manner of death as a homicide.

According to the charges, police found three iPhones inside the crashed vehicle, and two belonged to Molette. Authorities determined the third phone reportedly belonged to the 16-year-old suspect as it was connected to email addresses and social media accounts of the teen. The phone also matched the phone number the 16-year-old used to contact his probation officer.

Court documents say that Molette was planning to sell two THC vape cartridges to the 16-year-old.

Surveillance footage also captured "the shooting itself and the path taken" by the 16-year-old and his acquaintance, court documents allege.

Robbinsdale police say that robbery is considered a motive in this fatal shooting.

What they're saying:

"Dogged determination and strong investigative work, along with great cooperation from the residents and businesses in Robbinsdale brought this case to where it is now," Robbinsdale Police Captain John Elders said.

The Robbinsdale Police Department said this was the only homicide that occurred in the city in 2024.
