One dead after trench collapse in Lakeville, Minn.

Authorities confirmed that one person is dead after the trench he was working in collapsed Tuesday afternoon in Lakeville, Minn. And police say the wet soil that buried the man alive was about as heavy as a small car.

According to police, the call came in around 3:45 p.m. of a collapse at a new home construction site near 179th and Hyde Park Ave.  When crews arrived, they found the male deceased in the trench around 7 feet deep.

The brother of the deceased middle-aged victim happened to be the person operating the backhoe at the time of the incident. He and other construction workers tried to jump in to save him, but the collapsing soil made it impossible.

Police say the man is from the south metro area. He works for DSM excavating, a company based out of Hastings, Minn.
