On Nov. 21, 1961, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. flew to Mankato to spread his vision of freedom, justice and equality for all across the U.S.

MLK documentary

Big picture view:

The civil rights activist spoke to all who would listen in a then-predominantly white community.

"Not only do we tell the story of the history of Dr. King’s visit to Mankato. We also talk about the enduring systematic racism that exists in Mankato and Minnesota at large. We are far behind in the education gap. We are far behind in housing outcomes," Dr. Haque told FOX 9.

How the film was made

Dig deeper:

The film includes preserved recordings and interviews with surviving attendees. Dr. King spent his time in Mankato by preaching at a local church and speaking at Mankato High School.

"He enjoyed his time here," film director Ryan Sturgis says. "It definitely checked off a box for him to get to a Midwest community and spread his message."

The Source: Minnesota State University-Mankato history professor Dr. Jameel Haque and local film director Ryan Sturgis worked to piece together Dr. King’s visit.
