Minnesota weather: Warming shelters, beds available during cold snap

As a cold snap reminds Minnesotans that winter is here again, several agencies and organizations in the Twin Cities are providing spaces for people who are looking for a place to keep warm.

Salvation Army ‘arctic overflow’

What we know: The Salvation Army says its Harbor Light emergency shelter will make an additional 40 beds available Wednesday through Friday as part of its "arctic overflow".

As winter progresses, extra beds will be made available every night beginning on Jan. 1, through Feb. 28.

Those seeking emergency overnight shelter should contact Adult Shelter Connect at 612-248-2350 for availability.

The Salvation Army's centers in the Twin Cities will also remain open weekdays during normal business hours to serve as warming centers for those in need. They can be found at:

  • Hennepin County libraries: All Hennepin County libraries are available as warming centers during normal business hours.

Ramsey County

Three of the county’s 2024-2025 winter warming spaces are set to open on Wednesday, with the fourth opening on Sunday, Dec. 15. The spaces are open 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., and offer seating, blankets, light snacks and warm beverages.

Locations will be available for women, families and youth ages 18-24.

  • The Holy Christian Church (Dec. 11): 125 Stevens St. W., serving women.
  • Phalen Activity Center (Dec. 11): 1530 Phalen Dr., serving single adult men.
  • Newell Park Building (Dec. 11): 900 Fairview Ave N., serving single adult men.
  • Saint Paul-Reformation Lutheran (Dec. 15): 100 N. Oxford St., serving families and youth ages 18-24.

Gusty breezes, turning bitterly cold Wednesday

Why you should care: Temperatures are expected to fall throughout the day on Wednesday with afternoon highs in the single digits for the Twin Cities metro area.

Gusty winds will make it feel like temperatures are 15–20 degrees below zero in central Minnesota, and 20–40 degrees below zero in northern regions.

The bitter cold will hang around Thursday before heating up on Friday and into the weekend.
