Minnesota primary races to watch on Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - Minnesota voters head to the polls on Tuesday to decide a number of hotly contested primary races.

Races to watch 

DFL mainstay and longest actively serving Minnesota state representative Phyllis Kahn is fighting off tough competition in legislative district 60B.

In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican front runner Jason Lewis is also fending off a possible upset from former lawmaker John Howe or businesswoman Darlene Miller. Hamline University Professor David Schultz says it is a race that will likely set the stage for a closely contested general election.

“Most people suspect that [Lewis] will probably win that primary, but that’s a race that’s going to attract national attention because that’s a race in what has now become a swing seat,” said Schultz.

Another race to watch is the Minnesota Supreme Court, where incumbent Justice Natalie Hudson is facing a challenge from two candidates with no judicial experience: attorney Craig Foss and attorney Michelle MacDonald. Most expect Hudson to win, but low voter turnout could tighten the race.

Turnout could be just 5 to 8 percent

Statewide, experts believe voter turnout could be as low as 5 to 8 percent of registered voters. Since Minnesota moved its primary from September to August, turnout has never been higher than 15 percent.
