Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport saw record number of passengers in 2018
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (FOX 9) - A record number of passengers traveled through Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last year, according to the latest statistics from the Metropolitan Airports Commission.
Last year, MSP saw 38,037,381 passengers, which was about 3,000 more passengers than in 2017. Delta Air Lines, which is airport's largest carrier, and Delta's regional partners carried 71.4 percent of all passengers at MSP.
MAC offficial statistics show there is strong local demand for air travel. In 2018, 63 percent of all passenger traffic came from passengers beginning or ending their trips at MSP. This is up three percent from 2017 and up 11 percent from 2008.
The amount of cargo also increased by 4.3 percent in 2018. The number of flights at MSP however, took a 2.1 percent decrease from 2017. In 2018, the airport had 407,476 takeoffs and landings. MSP hit a flight peak in 2004 with 541,093 flights.
“We continue to see very strong demand for air service at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport,” said Metropolitan Airports Commission Executive Director and CEO Brian Ryks. “JetBlue filled out the ranks of airlines serving the airport in 2018, and 2019 is off to a great start, with a significant increase in routes to be flown by hometown carrier Sun Country, Aer Lingus launching service to Dublin, Ireland and Delta Air Lines to Mexico City and Seoul, South Korea.”
