Memorial Day in Minnesota: What to see, where to be

Memorial Day is a chance for all Americans to honor those who have given their lives to serve our country. There are many events planned across the Twin Cities to pay tribute to our fallen troops.

FORT SNELLING: Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, U.S. Sen Amy Klobuchar and Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Douglas L. Julin scheduled to give Memorial Day remarks. A 9:45 a.m. wreath presentation is followed by a parade and ceremony. The nonprofit group Flags for Fort Snelling placed more than 50,000 flags at the cemetery for Memorial Day. “That flag is a symbol of America and a symbol of the service to the nation that that veteran has given,” said Cemetery Director John Knapp.

MINNEAPOLIS: Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis is holding its 22nd annual Memorial Day celebration. This year's event not only pays tribute to our fallen heroes, but also recognizes the founders of Minneapolis as the city prepares to celebrate its 150th birthday. The event is free and runs from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. How Lakewood Cemetery prepared for 5,000 visitors.

LOWRY BRIDGE LIT: The Lowry Bridge in Minneapolis will be lit red, white and blue to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.

ST. PAUL / STATE CAPITOL: Speeches, music and poetry at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on John Ireland Boulevard, beginning at 9:30 a.m. March of the color guards and burial flags of two KIAs from Minnesota presented to family members at 3 p.m. ceremony.

28-MILE WALK: “March and Mayhem for Them” begins at 6 a.m. in Red Wing, finishing in Hastings at 5 p.m. with live music and food at the Rotary Pavilion. $5 donation suggested, free for veterans and active-duty military. www.marchforthem.org

STILLWATER: Wreath laying and a flyover by a T-6 Thunder Flight Team at the Stillwater Veterans Memorial, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

PRESIDENT TRUMP AT ARLINGTON: President Donald Trump just returned from his first overseas trip as president, and he took part in the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The president also delivered a speech during the event.
