Mary Tyler Moore statue returns to the corner of 7th and Nicollet
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The renowned Mary Tyler Moore statue has finally returned to its original home on the corner of 7th and Nicollet in downtown Minneapolis. The statue is adjacent to where Moore tossed her tam in the TV series credits.
The statue was relocated two years ago along with other public art due to construction on the Nicollet Mall. For a time the statue was in storage. Most recently it was on temporary display at the city’s visitor center on the mall.
The reinstallation of the statue by artist Gwendolyn Gillen marks the final week of construction on Nicollet. The city will be moving barricades, street and sidewalk sweeping and putting out furniture in preparation of the official completion celebration this Thursday.
Meet Minneapolis calls Mary Tyler Moore “the most famous TV resident Minneapolis ever had.” The actress starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show from 1970-1977 as a local news producer.
She won seven Emmy Awards over the course of her career. Moore passed away in January.
