Man killed by police in Bloomington, Minn. refused to drop gun

Police in Bloomington, Minn. shot and killed a man after they say he refused to drop a gun. Officers were called to a report of a suicidal man near 99th Street and Nesbitt Avenue at about 11 p.m. Thursday.

The 24-year-old man had been living with his mother to get back on his feet after losing his job and breaking up with his girlfriend in the past month. Late Thursday night, he called his mom to tell her he loved her and that life wasn't worth living, so when she found him in the lower level parking garage of an apartment complex, holding a gun to his head, she called police.

As officers responded, they found the man walking just 5 blocks from his mother's home. Investigators said he refused repeated commands to drop his gun. Shots were fired, and the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"These are very sad and tragic situations," Deputy Chief Rich Hart said. "Unfortunately you can't predict the behavior when people are despondent, and the investigation will reveal more at this point in time."
