Lynx defeat Mystics in Whalen's final regular season game

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - If all good things must come to an end, great careers are in need of a grand finale.

That’s what Lindsay Whalen put together in one more go Sunday at Target Center in her final regular season home game with the Lynx. It was the end of an emotional week after announcing her retirement from the WNBA on Monday.

"I feel like we've done this together, we build this this together - built this on Rock 'n' Roll and on heart and soul, as well," Whalen said Sunday night.

Her journey is one that’s played out like a movie, going from Small Town USA to Team USA with a Final Four and four WNBA Championships scattered in the middle - impacting an entire state along the way.

Whalen’s influence infiltrated every facet of basketball, with her hard work, passion and leadership leaving a legacy for teammates to now carry on.

It was a night revolved around one of the most dedicated players in the game, and meaning was certainly not lost on the Lynx legend. In fact. Governor Dayton declared Aug. 19 "Lindsay Whalen Day."

"It's been really overwhelming so I really appreciate the support," she said. "It's been good. I should've hired a documentary crew to follow me this last week."

The ride isn’t over just yet for Whalen, as she heads to the WNBA postseason for a 13th time.
