EDINA, Minn. (FOX 9) - The Edina community is mourning the loss of a legend in Minnesota high school hockey. Former Edina High School boys hockey coach Willard Ikola has passed away at the age of 92.

In a statement, Edina Public Schools writes that Coach Ikola passed away on Monday evening. He served as Edina High School's boys hockey coach for more than three decades before retiring in 1991.

The statement from Edina school leaders states in part: "Ike will be remembered for many things, but probably his most notable trademark is his houndstooth hat and his modest attitude towards all his coaching accolades stating, ‘I never scored a goal or prevented one either, all the credits for our success belongs to the kids.’

Coach Willard Ikola's career accomplishments
The backstory:
During 33 years on the bench, Coach Ikola led Edina to 616 wins, eight state titles, 22 Lake Conference titles, and 19 state tournament appearances. He was named Minnesota High School Hockey Coach of the Year six times during his coaching career and holds the second most wins of any coach in Minnesota history and the third most nationally.
As a player, he helped Eveleth win three straight state championships, played for the University of Michigan, and later the 1956 U.S. Olympic Team.
