Inside the $50 million Lake Minnetonka mansion: Most expensive home ever listed in Minnesota

A mansion on Lake Minnetonka is turning heads with its unmatched scale and luxury.

Inside the most expensive home ever listed in Minnesota

What we know:

Lake Point Estate sits on eight acres in the heart of Lake Minnetonka, boasting 650 feet of private shoreline. The property took eight years, several lots, and a thousand workers to build as a dream home for a local businessman who passed away in 2023, just months before its completion.

Lindsay Bacigalupo, co-owner of Engel and Volkers Minneapolis and one of the co-listing agents, described the estate as truly unique. "I think this property is one of one," said Bacigalupo. "It really is unlike anything else." She added, "The size and scale, quality, textures, I mean, all of the things about this property and the build, it's breathtaking."

The estate includes two guest houses, a lake porch perched above the water, a boat house, and a pool house with its own kitchenette, dining area, and fireplace. The main house itself is 30,000 square feet with eight bedrooms and 18 bathrooms, offering spectacular views of the lake from almost every angle.

Bacigalupo explained, "I know 30,000 square feet sounds like such a large number. But as you spend more time here, the home is very usable." Inside, visitors are greeted by a great room with high ceilings, two seating areas, and a TV hidden behind a marble fireplace. The family room next door features a custom kitchen, an eating area for 12, an informal living room, and a living wall made of moss.

Instead of a primary suite, the home has a primary wing with a main office, walk-in closet, and a bathroom with a kitchenette and a stand-alone tub carved from a single slab of marble. The second floor includes a hair salon and a bunk room that sleeps 12, with a ceiling painted to look like the night sky. "You can just imagine the sleepovers that would happen in that room. And you could just hear the laughter and all the little conversations that would be had as all the kids were kind of piled into those bunk beds," said Bacigalupo.

An entertainer's dream

Dig deeper:

The lower level features a wellness suite with a gym, sauna, steam room, and Himalayan salt room designed to help with asthma, allergies, and skin conditions. There is also a bowling alley, game room, golf simulator, movie theater, custom bar, and a fully vented cigar lounge. The wine cave, a subterranean space with a light fixture shaped like an upside-down tree and a temperature-controlled wine room, is a highlight.

"It was so thoughtfully designed and put together that a lot of the spaces would be a part of your, maybe not everyday life, but really your natural, how you live and be a part of almost daily living," said Bacigalupo.

The estate is listed for $50 million, and Bacigalupo noted it would cost twice as much to build today. "We really are 50-50 on whether we feel the buyer will be somebody local or somebody national or even international," said Bacigalupo.

From the heated driveway to the massive chandeliers and the piano that plays itself, Lake Point Estate is packed with unique features. "I do feel that the design of this home is very timeless. So it's going to stay relevant for a long time," said Bacigalupo.

'A very approachable home'

Big picture view:

The listing of Lake Point Estate at $50 million sets a new record for Minnesota real estate, reflecting both the scale of the property and the level of craftsmanship involved. Even in an area known for luxury living, this estate is in a class of its own.

The home was designed to be both grand and livable, with spaces that cater to family gatherings, entertaining, and relaxation. The attention to detail and the array of amenities make it a showcase for what is possible in luxury home construction.
