Free Bikes for Kids hopes to donate 5,000 bicycles

Terry Esau is the founder of Free Bikes for Kids, an organization that is currently collecting bikes at various Allina Hospital and Clinic locations across the Twin Cities metro through October 10. The organization is expecting 5,000 bikes to be donated.

The bikes are currently being stored and refurbished at the Mall of America which has donated 60,000 square feet of space to house the thousands of bikes.

For the next two months, that space will be open every day of the week, inviting volunteers in. Last year had 4,000 volunteers and this year they expect more.

“Do you remember your first bike? Your first bike was like a ticket to freedom to explore the world,” Esau told Fox 9.

Once they bikes are ready for use they will be given to various non-profits, schools, and churches to help find needy kids.
