Baby found dead in Brooklyn Park apartment, mother arrested

Police in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, are investigating after a 16-day-old child was found dead Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to the Willows Apartment Complex around 4:11 p.m. where they found the baby unconscious. The mother told police that the child was dead.

According to police, responders spent about 40 minutes trying to resuscitate the child, but she didn't survive. 30-year-old Melissa Anastaisa Hicks was arrested for child endangerment.

“It’s a true tragedy," Brooklyn Park Deputy Police Chief Mark Bruley said. "You have to understand this is a tragedy for the family, a tragedy for the officers and detectives that have to work on this. It’s a tough case, but it’s the work that we do.”

The investigation into what caused the baby's death remains ongoing.
