(FOX 9) - How bad is Monday morning's commute in the ice-covered Twin Cities metro? Take a word of caution from FOX 9 meteorologist Cody Matz, who reported a 3 mph drive through icy neighborhood streets, a fishtailing 20 mph on main roads and 35 mph on wet and sometimes slick interstates.
Dozens of school delays and closings are in effect Monday morning due to the icy roads. You can see a complete list at fox9.com/closings.
At 10 p.m. Sunday night, MnDOT reported that many state and interstate roadways, especially northwest and west of the Twin Cities, were completely covered in ice, leading to dozens of accidents statewide. Treatments improved some road conditions, but temperatures continued falling overnight and dropped below freezing Monday morning.
Seeing the moisture build up Sunday afternoon, MnDOT started to prepare.
“We will have people ready to respond as quickly as possible to respond to any slippery spots, but I think it’s up to motorists to take their time tomorrow,” said MnDOT's Kevin Gutknecht.
MnDOT says the best advice they can give is to drive cautiously and give yourself plenty of time.
