Hurricane Season 2016: Ready, set, go…

Minneapolis, KMSP - The 2016 Hurricane season is about to officially start on June 1 and will last through the month of November. This timeframe for hurricane season is the same every year but tropical development has not been waiting for the official start. This year, we have already seen a named storm, Alex, one of the earliest ones ever, back In January.

Since the letter “A” has been grabbed by Alex, could the letter “B” be next, as a possible Bonnie.

The official start to hurricane season is Wednesday June 1, and with two systems already checked off, this could be a busy season according to some meteorologists.

EL NINO vs LA NINA

The strong El Nino pattern that protected the Upper Midwest from the frigid hands of winter is starting to weaken.  In fact, some scientists are eyeing the possibility of the return of La Nina.  Check out the NOAA graphics below to see how hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific can be influence by El Nino or La Nina.

I know it may sound strange, but most meteorologists are a bit strange when it comes to weather, but I used to enjoy checking out the list of hurricane names, just to see if my name was on the list. Check out the list above of assigned hurricane names for the 2016 season coming up on June 1.
