Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has resigned. The move is unexpected and, so far, no reason has been given. The Minnesota Vikings released this statement Wednesday morning:

In a press conference, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said Turner resigned for "personal reasons" and that he was "very, very surprised" by Turner's decision.

“He was pretty set in his ideas and his reasons.” Zimmer said.

Zimmer choked up during the press conference when describing what kind of person Norv is. He called him a great coach, teacher and person.

Statement from Norv Turner

“I have tremendous respect for Mike Zimmer, our coaching staff, and our players and at this time I think it is in the best interest of the team to step down. I thank the Wilf family for my time here in Minnesota and want to see our players and coaches achieve success."

Turner's tenure with Vikings

Turner has been with the Vikings since Jan. 2014. The Vikings started 5-0 this season, but are coming off of two consecutive losses, making them 5-2. The next game is at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday against the Lions. The Vikings rank 23rd in scoring offense, 31st in total yards, 28th in passing and 31st in rushing this season.

Norv's son, Scott Turner, will remain the Vikings quarterbacks coach.

Pat Shurmur takes over play-calling

New offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur was the Rams offensive coordinator when Sam Bradford set the NFL record for completions by a first-year player. He was also Philadelphia's offensive coordinator and interim head coach last season when Bradford started in 14 games and went 7-7.

Sam Bradford on Turner

Sam Bradford said he found out Turner was leaving from his wife who got an alert on her phone, as of 11 a.m. Wednesday Bradford hasn’t talked to Turner.

“I was surprised, I didn’t really think anything was different… Really just surprised.” Bradford said.

Zimmer's medical procedure

During the press conference, Zimmer also addressed his minor medical procedure, he canceled his press conference on Tuesday to have a procedure done on his eye for a retinal tear.
