The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved a $166 million Athletes Village Friday. The 320,000 square foot village will include an indoor football practice facility, updated practice and training facilities for basketball and renovations to several other buildings.

The project received unanimous approval from the regents, who hope to start construction in the next few weeks before the ground freezes.

The University has already raised about $76.5 million from donors for the project and plans to borrow another $90 million from the athletics department.

The regents said the Athletes Village is a necessary upgrade to the university’s “third-rate” facilities that will help improve recruiting, the Associated Press reported.
