Suspect of believed hate crime shooting near U of M charged
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) - The suspected shooter of a believed hate crime shooting that happened near the University of Minnesota was arrested and charged Saturday night, according to the University of Minnesota Police.
26-year-old Anthony John Sawina of Lauderdale was charged with several counts of second degree assault with a dangerous weapon.
The shooting happened on June 29 near the corner of 14th Avenue SE and 6th Street SE around 2:30 a.m.
Five young men wearing traditional Somali robes were getting ready to drive away when the suspect approached and started saying anti-Muslim rhetoric.
Feeling threatened two of the men got out of the car. It was then that the man pulled out a gun. The two men on foot started to run, while the car pulled away. As they drove off, the man fired at the car, injuring two inside.
