President declares Sept. flooding in southern MN major disaster

President Barack Obama officially declared the significant storm and flooding in Sept. that impacted nine southern Minnesota counties a major disaster.

This declaration will bring federal aid to the following counties: Blue Earth, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Le Sueur, Rice, Steele, and Waseca. Heavy rainfall and flooding on September 21 and 22 caused damage to roads, buildings, and more.

This declaration makes federal aid available for public infrastructure and hazard mitigation to the communities impacted.

According to a preliminary damage report completed in Oct., officials determined $8.3 million in public infrastructure damage and $10.1 million in estimated individual needs.

Governor Mark Dayton's request for individual aid is still under review.

Dayton requested for disaster relief on October 20.
