Lakeville man pleads guilty to attempted murder of his 2 sons

Jay Anthony Ernst, 27, of Lakeville, Minn. is being charged with two counts of first degree attempted murder.

A Lakeville man pleaded guilty in Dakota County Court to two counts of attempted murder of his two young sons, in connection to his attempted suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.

On October 29 last year, officers responded to a Lakeville home where 28-year-old Jay Anthony Ernst was found by a relative inside his running vehicle with the garage door closed. Attached to the tailpipe was a garden hose that ran back inside one of the car's windows.

The relative then pulled the hose out and pounded on the window. Ernst then got out of the back hatch door of the vehicle, opened the garage door, said goodbye and drove off with his two-year-old and four-year-old sons.

After an Amber Alert was issued, Burnsville Police tracked down Ernst's car driving southbound on I-35E.

The sentencing date is set for September 16 at 1:00 p.m. in Hastings.
