High-speed shootout ends in deadly crash in north Minneapolis

A high-speed chase and shootout between two vehicles in north Minneapolis Thursday morning ended in a crash that left one person dead and another injured.

The incident began shortly after 2 a.m. with a report of a fight between two different groups of people in two different cars, according to Minneapolis police. The two groups began chasing each other east on 53rd Avenue N when people in one car began shooting at the other vehicle.

Both vehicles crashed near the intersection of 53rd and Logan Avenue. A man in one vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene.

It is not clear whether the victim died as a result of the shooting or the crash. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the identity of the victim, as well as the cause of death.

A woman in the other car was transported to North Memorial Medical Center with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Police are still trying to determine how many people were actually inside the two vehicles, but believe some of the passengers may have fled before officers arrived.
